The Robots Are Buying Coffee With Crypto (And Other Lab Notes)
· @Rich
Welcome back, Lab Rats. Here’s the vibe check: Bitcoin is sitting around $81K, roughly 35% below last October’s all-time high. It’s been pacing in the same $80K–$87K hallway for a month like a dog that heard a noise.
Why? Inflation came in a little spicy (3.7%), and now there’s a coin-flip chance the Fed raises rates on October 28. The Fear & Greed Index has dropped from 82 in August to 53. That’s not fear, it’s just… Tuesday energy.
But while humans stare at charts, something weirder is happening in the lab.
Robots with wallets
AI agents have now made 138 million payments in crypto over Coinbase’s x402 protocol, according to Chainalysis. Not humans. Bots, paying other bots, for bot things.
And they are cheap. More than 87% of those payments were under 10 cents. Your AI agent isn’t buying a Lambo. It’s buying a single API call, a quick code review, or a data lookup, and paying in stablecoins like a very polite vending machine.
The wildest stat is speed. In late 2025, a wallet was typically 73 days old before it made its first agent payment. In Q3 2026, it was 18 minutes. Two-thirds of wallets now start spending within an hour of being funded. Robots don’t do onboarding calls. They just go.
Fun footnote: memecoins drove a lot of the early x402 volume, then faded. Even the robots got bored of dog coins. Speaking of which…
Meme coins: the dog is tired
DOGE is around 8 cents and below every moving average a chart can draw. SHIB and PEPE are in the same nap position. PEPE has even slipped below its lower Bollinger Band, which is chart-speak for “lying face-down on the carpet.”
The degens haven’t left. They’ve moved. Little meme tokens on Robinhood Chain popped 12–21% in a day this week, with names like Artificial Inu and CASHCAT. Yes, an AI-themed dog coin. The lab approves of the branding, if not the risk.
Public service announcement: the internet is currently flooded with “TOP 10 100x MEME COINS” presale posts. If a stranger promises you 1,300% returns, they’re not your friend. They’re marketing. Lab Rats verify before they ape.
Washington: the bill that didn’t
The CLARITY Act, crypto’s big “please just tell us the rules” bill, lost a Senate vote 49–50 on September 15. One vote short. Painful.
So the agencies are writing the rules themselves. The CFTC floated new rules on October 5 for leveraged retail crypto trading. The SEC has a proposal that would let crypto startups raise up to $5M without the full paperwork marathon, and comments close October 20. Everyone is aiming for January 18, 2027.
Plot twist: the SEC is down to just two commissioners, so every rule now needs both of them to agree. It’s basically a group project with two people. What could go wrong?
Lab Rats predictions (for entertainment only)
- By year-end, a bot will pay another bot to write a better bot. Then pay a fourth bot to review the code for 3 cents.
- Bitcoin keeps pacing the $80K–$87K hallway until the Fed blinks. A rate hike tests the $77K floor. A Fed that sounds done gets us a party in the high $80s.
- AI tokens get sorted into two piles: ones with real paying users, and ones with really nice websites. The market will figure out which is which.
- Memecoins return, as always, the moment everyone writes their obituary. We are not writing one. We’re just checking their pulse.
- Congress reintroduces the crypto bill in January, and we’ll all pretend to be surprised.
The big idea: the next wave of crypto users might not be people at all. It might be millions of tiny AI agents paying each other pennies, all day, every day. That’s the future we’re building toward here at AI Labs. Stay curious, stay skeptical, and keep your cheese safe.
